Types Of Heart Disease

According to the cardiologist, coronary artery disease is a condition that is caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis means narrowing and hardening of the coronary arteries. In this type of disease, the arteries become so narrow and hard that a blockage occurs in them. Over time, atherosclerosis develops in a person, and eventually, limits the blood flow to the heart by blocking the arteries. This condition is usually the cause of a heart attack, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease.

Myocardial infarction, also known as heart attack, occurs when the blood flow to the heart muscle decreases. When the coronary arteries become narrower, the fat, cholesterol, and other materials accumulate together and make a waxy substance called plaque. During a heart attack, a blood clot is made around the plaque and it blocks the blood flow. Myocardial infarction can lead to permanent damage or death of part of the heart muscle.

Heart failure occurs when the heart muscle is unable to pump blood properly. Although it does not mean that the heart has stopped working or heart attack has happened, majority of people with heart failure have had a history of heart attack in the past.

Almost all individuals lose some of their heart pumping capacity gradually as they age. Patients should take care of themselves, visit their physicians regularly, and track their treatments to improve and have the chance of a longer life.

What is the cause of heart failure?

As a result of age, the power of the heart naturally decreases in blood pumping. Apart from aging, other causes which lead to heart failure include smoking, high blood fat, obesity, diabetes, etc. High blood pressure and diabetes are the most common causes of heart failure. Heart valve problems, congenital heart disease, and irregular heartbeat lead to heart failure too.

Coronary artery disease is one of the major risk factors for heart failure.

Any change in the natural heartbeat is called arrhythmia disease. This condition involves the electrical impulses of the heart and is not associated with blockage of the arteries. The electrical impulses may be too fast, very slow, or irregular. Depending on the kind of irregularity in the impulses, the heartbeat will change. When the heart does not have a regular rhythm and heartbeat, it will not be able to pump the blood to the lungs, brain, and other vital organs of the body properly and as it should be. The inefficient blood flow to the organs is dangerous and can cause damage to them.

A person who has heart palpitations should go to the doctor. After examining the patient, the doctor may suggest him or her get an electrocardiogram which can help the doctor diagnose the cause of heart palpitations, and sometimes the doctor asks the patient to have some tests to detect underlying diseases. If the palpitations are not detected, a device called holter monitor or ambulatory electrocardiogram will be connected to the patient continuously for 24 hours or more to record the electrocardiogram and determine the type of patient’s heart arrhythmia, if there were any heart palpitations.

In addition to the holter monitor, exercise stress test can be performed to help the doctor and patient ensure that severe activity is not a risk factor for arrhythmia.

Principles of the treatment are based on the treatment of heart palpitations, elimination of the causative agents (drug, tobacco, coffee, tea, and alcohol), and diagnosis and treatment of other existing or possible diseases (hyperthyroidism, low blood sugar, menopausal symptoms, and anxiety) that most often, by observing healthy living habits, having proper nutrition, avoiding stress and and excitement, and not doing inappropriate physical exercises the patient’s heart palpitations will be treated.

In addition to  ensuring the general health of the person, having a general practitioner is very important for the person to be able to refer to the best cardiologist if needed. You should be referred to the cardiologist by a general practitioner who is aware of your medical condition and history of it, and familiar with you and your priorities. Also, it is recommended that a general practitioner provides all necessary information about the patient to the cardiologist. The general practitioner can help you find the best cardiologist too. Another way to find the best cardiologist is to know how much he or she is active, and with which organizations he or she works. The cardiologist who is affiliated with famous organizations, and has a high number of patient visits, is usually approved by those organizations and patients. Moreover, doctors, who have performed more surgeries, are naturally more skilled.

A cardiologist is a specialist in the field of heart disease , and has had necessary training and special skills in diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases or conditions of the heart and blood vessels.

A cardiologist should do many researches on obstructive lesions, and heart conditions and diseases.

A cardiologist should also monitor several factors, such as high cholesterol, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and prevent the development of heart disease.

When the patient is referred to a cardiologist by a general practitioner, all risk factors are examined. These risk factors include obesity, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, unhealthy eating habits, and family history of heart disease.

The Most Important Causes of Heart Disease

The most important cause of cardiovascular disease is atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which arteries that carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart and other parts of the body become narrowed and hardened overtime so it reduces the transfer of oxygen and food to the cells of the body.

Some factors cause faster atherosclerosis, and if they do, the possibility of developing cardiovascular disease increases. You should know these risk factors, and take the medical advice into consideration in order to pervert development of cardiovascular disease , deaths, and disabilities caused by them.

Risk factors for cardiovascular disease

Risk factors for cardiovascular disease include:

Age, male gender, family history of early heart disease, high blood pressure, high blood lipids (specially cholesterol), diabetes mellitus, smoking, obesity, inactivity (lack of physical exercises), and blood clotting disorders.

Considering that diabetes is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, it is usually associated with other risk factors, and sometimes it may cause them, people with diabetes should be more careful about their cardiovascular health than others.

Many medical studies have also shown that risk factors for cardiovascular disease are more common in people with type 2 diabetes.
